Pier.
A 30' steel yacht suffered steering failure during the early hours of
Sunday morning whilst attempting to pick up a mooring in Beaumaris Bay.
The yacht drifted under Beaumaris pier and lodged there on a falling tide
so that by day break the yacht was high and dry but precariously balanced
on its keel. The lone sailor on board had suffered slight facial injuries
during the incident and was clearly extremely fatigued.
Holyhead Mobile Coastguard were requested to provide support to keep
onlookers away from the boat given the danger of it falling with fatal
consequences on anyone standing alongside.
With a south westerly gale building, the lifeboat helmsman planned the
extrication of the yacht. One concern was that with the prevailing weather
conditions that if the yacht started to float it could crash into the pier
supports, and as it was over the weight limit for the pier, possible
demolish a section of the pier.
Three lifeboat crewmen were placed on board the yacht and a temporary
repair undertaken to the steering. When the tide started to rise around
the stranded yacht the lifeboat was launched and a tow established. Just
before the yacht started to float freely on the rising tide it was pulled
clear of the pier by the lifeboat and towed safely to a nearby mooring.
The pier suffered no damage and damage to the yacht was superficial. |
